Suribachi Bowl is a traditional Japanese grinding bowl, designed with a textured, ridged interior that makes it ideal for mashing and grinding ingredients while still retaining a bit of texture. The jagged texture on the inside, known as kushime, is carefully handcrafted by pressing a custom made metal comb, designed and maintained by the artisan, into the clay.
In Japan, suribachi bowls have traditionally been used for grinding sesame seeds, making dishes like shiraae (mashed tofu with vegetables) and tororo (grated yam). They were typically large, ranging from 20 to 30 cm in diameter. This new, compact version was designed to better suit modern lifestyles—easy to use, simple to store, and perfect for everyday cooking. It’s perfect for preparing guacamole, grinding nuts, spice blends, making dressings and more.
