Mino ware, a term for ceramics crafted in the eastern region of the historical Mino Province (present-day Gifu Prefecture), boasts a rich heritage. Its origins trace back to the Sue ware kilns of the Nara period (710-794), with significant production flourishing during the Warring States period (1467-1568). Known for its adaptability, Mino ware has evolved with the times, reflecting the changing demands and fashions without being confined to a single characteristic style.
In the Meiji Period, the introduction of Western designs led to the prominence of white porcelain ware, making Mino ware a staple in Japanese households, accounting for 50% of the porcelain used across the country.
Today, Mino ware continues to thrive, produced by a diverse array of manufacturers ranging from large factories to small artisanal workshops. The variety of available pottery includes traditional Japanese tableware, Western tableware, and decorative items like flower vases. Mino ware caters to a broad spectrum of tastes, from classic and artist-oriented designs to modern, lifestyle-focused creations.
