Japanese Awa Shijira Cotton Folding Fan by Nagao Orifu

A beautiful Japanese folding fan made with Awa Shijira, a traditional cotton textile from Tokushima on the island of Shikoku.

Awa Shijira is known for its softly rippled surface, called shibo. The texture is created by weaving the warp threads at different levels of tension, then passing the finished cloth through hot water and drying it to bring out the fabric’s distinctive texture. The result is a light and relaxed textile with a lovely sense of movement.

This fan is made by Nagao Orifu, a long-established textile maker in Tokushima with roots dating back to 1897. The company handles the entire production process, from dyeing and weaving to the final finishing of the fabric.

The textured cotton fabric is paired with natural bamboo ribs to create a generously sized fan that is both practical and beautiful. It is easy to carry in your bag for warm summer days and also makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves Japanese textiles and traditional craftsmanship.

Three patterns are available:

• Katsuo Stripe
  A traditional Japanese stripe pattern featuring shades that move from dark to light. The name Katsuo-jima comes from the changing tones seen along the body of a skipjack tuna.
• Blue Kasuri Stripe
  Named after kasuri, a traditional Japanese textile style known for its softly blurred and irregular patterns. Layered shades of blue with fine red and beige lines give this design a relaxed, summery character.
  
• White Check
  A classic Japanese check pattern woven in fine charcoal-grey lines over a soft ivory-white background. Its pale colours and delicate design recall the cool, airy look of traditional summer kimono and yukata.
