Katsushika Hokusai “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” 3D Ukiyo-e Layered Card

A message card that transforms one of Japan’s most iconic ukiyo-e masterpieces into a small paper diorama.

Three beautifully detailed cards are placed one behind another to create a striking sense of depth. Delicate laser-cut openings bring the scene to life, with the powerful wave rising forward and its white spray appearing to reach beyond the original picture. Viewed from the side, the layered design makes the boats, wave and distant Mount Fuji feel like parts of a miniature landscape.

A writing area is included on one of the cards, and the set comes with an envelope. Send it as a memorable message card, or assemble it and display it as a miniature work of Japanese art.

About the Artwork

The Great Wave off Kanagawa was created by the ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai around 1830 to 1832 as part of his celebrated series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.

The scene shows three fast cargo boats being tossed beneath an enormous curling wave. In the distance, Mount Fuji appears small and still, creating a dramatic contrast between the movement of the sea and the calmness of the mountain.

The claw-like tips of the wave and the deep shades of blue give the scene its remarkable energy. By placing the viewer close to the towering wave, Hokusai created a powerful composition that has become one of the most widely recognized images in Japanese art.
