Sori Yanagi:
Born in Tokyo in 1915 as the eldest son of Yanagi Muneyoshi, the leader of the Mingei (folk crafts) movement, Sori Yanagi graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in oil painting. After working at Junzo Sakakura's office, he established the Yanagi Design Institute in 1952.
Yanagi aimed to create "beautiful forms for everyday use," a process characterized by the creation of models and prototypes before drafting final designs.
He designed a wide range of items, including the Olympic cauldron and torch for the Tokyo Olympics, stadium chairs, furniture, tableware, automobiles, and bridges.
