A beautiful used Nara uchiwa, a traditional Japanese paper fan known for its delicate openwork design.
This fan was made by Ikeda Gankodo, a long-established family workshop in Nara, Japan. Founded more than 170 years ago, Ikeda Gankodo is now the only remaining specialist dedicated to the traditional craft of Nara uchiwa.
Each fan is made through a series of skilled, time-consuming processes. Dyed washi paper is carefully carved using a technique called sukashi-bori, creating fine cutwork patterns across the surface. The paper is then mounted over a closely spaced bamboo frame, giving the fan its distinctive flexibility and gentle breeze.
The red and pale blue versions feature a deer or wild boar and a five-story pagoda, familiar symbols of Nara. The ivory version displays a more elaborate classical motif, framed by a decorative pattern along the lower edge.
Beautiful both as a functional summer fan and as wall decor, each piece carries the elegance of traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
These are used items and show visible signs of age, including fading, small tears, surface marks and wear around the edges. Please review all photos carefully before purchasing.
