Japanese Indigo Dyeing Apron made in Kurashiki

100% cotton aprons made by a small factory in the Kurashiki area of Okayama Prefecture Japan, famous for its Japanese indigo denim.

The beautiful blue colour is produced by exposing the fibres soaked in the dye to the open air.
Indigo dye is a very time consuming dye with low dyeability, and it requires repeated soaking and bleaching processes to finally become a solid color.
The more it is used and time passes, the more its look changes, which is the beauty of indigo dyeing.

Kurashiki, the City of Japanese Indigo Dyed Denim

Kurashiki City in Okayama prefecture in Japan, has long flourished as a textile town.
Although cotton cultivation, which began in the early Edo period, once went out of business, the city developed to become the nation's largest producing area of tabi (split-toed socks) and school uniforms from the 1920' s, utilizing the weaving and sewing techniques that had been developed for a long time.
Later, using the traditional Japanese indigo dyeing technique, the first pair of jeans sewn in Japan was born in 1965, making this city the birthplace of Japanese jeans.
