This art book, 111 Years of Junichi Nakahara, serves as the official catalog for the exhibition held in Tokyo’s Shibuya district from June to September 2024.
Junichi Nakahara (1913–1983) was a visionary artist, editor, fashion designer, and interior designer. Just one year after the end of World War II, he launched Soleil, a magazine dedicated to inspiring people to dream again and embrace beauty in everyday life. His work resonated deeply with women of the time, and his pursuit of aesthetic excellence continues to influence modern creators.
This book features approximately 480 illustrations, showcasing Nakahara’s work across various media, including magazines (Soleil, Himawari, Junior Soleil, Onna no Heya), fashion (Western clothing, yukata, kimono), paintings, dolls, and personal artifacts.
Even 111 years after his birth, Nakahara’s artistic brilliance remains undiminished, offering timeless inspiration to new generations.
About Junichi Nakahara (1913–1983)
Displaying artistic talent from a young age, Nakahara held his first solo exhibition at a Tokyo department store at just 18. His success led him to create illustrations for Shōjo no Tomo, becoming a celebrated artist of the era. Strongly influenced by Yumeji Takehisa, he collected Yumeji’s works in his youth.
Post-war, Nakahara devoted himself to uplifting women, founding influential magazines that shaped the foundations of women’s publishing. Beyond publishing, he made pioneering contributions in painting, fashion, styling, interior design, and doll-making. Despite battling illness from the late 1950s, he continued his artistic journey until his passing in 1983 at age 70.
