This unique incense holder by Kosaido borrows inspiration from kai awase - a matching game dating back to Japan's Heian period, where players would pair corresponding shells pieces adorned with illustrations.

In addition to paying homage to this traditional pastime, the seashell shape serves a functional purpose - preventing any spilling of ash after use, while doubling as a tasteful decorative piece when closed.

These particular incense holders feature illustrations from the Choju Giga ("Animal Caricatures") scrolls. Dating back to the 12th-13th century, the scrolls depict various scenes of anthropomorphic animals going about the activities of the day. Often described as "Japan's earliest manga", the Choju Giga scrolls are adored for their humour, and their insight into life in the late Heian and early Kamakura periods.

The holders are available in two varieties:

  • Bow and Arrow
  • Catch and Run

Japanese Incense "Choju Giga" series are available.
